ABOUT THE ARTISTS
YAEL KARAVAN
International performer, dancer and Artistic director of the Karavan Ensemble, Yael was born in Israel and grew up in Florence, Paris and London. In her dance research she travelled across Europe, Japan, Russia and Brazil searching for a physical language of expression which bridges between East and West and between dance and theatre. Her work is often described as visual poetry, drawing on elements of Butoh, dance, mime, clown, physical and visual theatre she explores themes of Memory, Metamorphosis, the invisible and the notion of repetitive cycles, as well as current urgent socio-political issues such as climate change, immigration, diversity and inequality. Intertwining dreamlike atmospheres with a humorous edge while balancing on the fine line between the tragic and the comic, the intimate and the collective, Karavan’s work is presented worldwide in theatres, galleries and museums, often in a site specific context. She studied and worked with Butoh masters such as Kazuo Ohno, Tadashi Endo, Carlotta Ikeda, Yumiko Yoshioka, Akiko Motofuji, Ko Morobushi and Natsu Nakajima, Akira Kasai, Yuko Kaseki, Minako Seki, Atsushi Takenuchi and sankai Juku amongst others. She was a member of Tadashi Endo’s MA-MU Dance Theatre for nearly 8 years and of Ten-Pen-Chi led by Yumiko Yoshioka for 3 years and has been teaching workshops internationally since 1999.

MARLENE JÖBSTL
Contemporary performance artist with 27 years of artistic experience.
« Butōka »
Director, researcher, choreographer, dancer, teacher, actress, improviser and performance artist. She made her first stage direction in Vienna in 1995. She trained in theatre art with Jacques Lecoq in Paris in 1998 and with Philippe Gaulier in London in 2000. She studied dramaturgy with Michel Azama in 2001. She created her first solo «LIMIT» for the FIU of Salamanca. During the creation in 2002 in Paris, she meets butō dance with Yumiko Yoshioka and it is a revelation: butō is placed between theatre and dance, an expressive artistic path of scenic freedom. In 2003 she creates «FEM.», a solo piece influenced by butō, both in the movements and in the poetic writing. She continues her butō dance training in various cities around the world such as Tokyo, Berlin, New York, with Yumiko Yoshioka and various teachers, especially with Yoshito Ohno, Daisuke Yoshimoto, Atsushi Takenouchi, with whom he cultivates a deep friendship. Over the years she has created several solo dance pieces, such as the last «Last Womb Standing» 2021 Bcn; several duets, such as the last «Blood» 2019 Bcn, with live musician Tobi. She is passionate about directing and choreographing solos and very diverse pro / amateur / children groups, always revealing an art «on the edge», in the thread of the sword. As a performative artist, she invests the peculiar spaces in festivals and galleries, valuing the unique specificity of the moment site specific performance art, and in 2021/2022 once a month in Espacio Nos, Bcn. Pushed by her teachers, Marlène has been developing her butō dance pedagogy since 2007 in Paris by focusing it on artistic research and since 2019 she opens an «AbaniKo BuTō, training for thinking creators». Several of her students are already moving with their butō dance solos in different spaces and events in Barcelona. She lives in Barcelona since 2014 where she directs, creates and dances, gives butō dance workshops and conferences this season 2022 also in Granada, Ibiza, Basel, Paris and Portugal.
