Butoh Gathering. March 27th – April 1st 2024
With Marlene Jöbstl, Sara Pons & Yael Karavan
It’s a fact, Renascimento em Dança sets its annual celebration by eastern time. Marlene Jöbstl, Sara Pons and Yael Karavan provide an attractive combination of approaching the butoh dance for a delightful gathering where beginners and advanced dancers are welcome to join.
Irene Álvarez, dancer and producer had the vision of this gathering by the end of 2021. She continues behind the project with the assistance of Virginia Torres, another dancer and ex resident at Quinta Ten Chi.
The catering, vegetarian based food will be provided by The Cafe, chef Blue & Filipe are the masters in the kitchen.
Designs and media by Alexa Papa.

PROGRAM

The schedule can suffer slight changes but that’s the general idea. In our last gathering we made this format and we really liked to have a complete day with each teacher to have a good immersion within their work and also we loved to have a day after the performance night to digest together and share about the experience afterwards.
If you are not able to join the complete journey, we allow a shorter mode of participation and also by single days. <<Check at the end of the page>>
WHAT THE ARTISTS BRING TO RED IV
MARLENE JÖBSTL
LIVE, DIE & TRAGEDY, COMEDY
Let’s focus on what really matters: living and dying. The present moment is life and death, it is a perpetual beginning and end, an eternal ephemeral.
And when we push the comic to the end, we arrive at tragedy. And when we push the tragic all the way, we find the comedy. They are the most contradictory aspects that, like night and day, are inseparable.
Making people laugh, making them cry, living and dying on stage, this is how the range of dances opens up to discover, to honor, to share.
Tragedy sustains values. It is located at the top of the mountain, in the clouds, holding the sky, because if the sky falls everything ends. Comedy makes fun of values. It is located at ground level, playing with the vibrant emotions of the now.
Have a sense of humor, what you can laugh at, with whom and why, develop your own humor. Having the tool of humor within reach is essential on stage as in life. It must be treated with great delicacy and intelligence.
Being able to be at the service of values, to dance seriously, a serious art that touches the depth of the living being between earth and sky, and adding a little humor to it, is the pinch of salt that makes us let ourselves embark on the white waters of any story. .

SARA PONS
THE HAND THAT THINKS
Through Body Weather manipulations we will enter into a series of ephemeral improvisation proposals.
Manipulations are an essential part of the Body Weather method and philosophy.
It consists of 7 very specific series that are worked in pairs, where breathing, listening and sensitivity to the condition of the body through touch, we soften, stretch and help the other person to expand and give more internal space. Then, after going through that giving and receiving, we will dance from a new and subtle body.

YAEL KARAVAN
MAKING VISIBLE THE INVISIBLE
The main elements that will be explored in the workshop are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness, and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression.

“In other forms of dance, such as flamenco or classical dance. the movements are derived from a fixed technique; they are imposed from the outside and are conventional in form. In my case, it’s the contrary, my dance is far removed from conventions and techniques, it is the unveiling of the inner life.”
